Feature: The Beatrice

Beatrice Exterior atop The Eventi Hotel
The newly opened Beatrice, above the also newly opened Eventi Hotel, is one of Manhattan’s newest luxury developments. The developer, JD Carlisle, has been rather tight lipped about the West Chelsea rental which has left interested tenants and real estate professionals alike intrigued.

Apparently, the interesting building name originated from the grandmother of JD Carlisle president, Evan Stein. According to Stein, "Beatrice" is an elegant name for an elegant building from an elegant woman. The glass tower in the sky was designed by Perkins-Eastman who also designed 34 Berry in Williamsburg and Murray Hill’s first green development, 33 E. 33rd.

Outside of the Beatrice, the newly dubbed West Chelsea neighborhood awaits. The N and R trains are the closest at only a one block distance. Express trains are accessible nearby at Penn Station. Staple restaurants such as Wolfgang’s Steakhouse and Buddakan serve the Midtown area hugely portioned steaks and Asian fusion cuisine. The organic and gourmet grocery store of Whole Foods is about 6 blocks away. With only 8 Whole Foods throughout the 5 boroughs, The Beatrice has easy access to the Chelsea location.

South View of the city from The Beatrice
West Chelsea is not exactly known for its nightlife and activities due to the fact that it borders the Garment District and Flower District. However, changes are soon to come as developers are eager to prove Midtown and surrounding areas are more than just tourist attractions. The already established Madison Square Garden and High Line Park have a host of sporting events, concerts, and summer concert series. The popular Chelsea nightclub scene has also spread further into West Chelsea. Bungalow 8, the popular California inspired lounge, is situated a couple blocks from the Beatrice. With palm trees, bungalow style seating and poolside murals; the lounge and nightclub is as popular as its Beverly Hills Hotel sister club.

Residents at the Beatrice will not have to walk too far for entertainment and dining options. In fact, they will not have to leave the building. The 20,000 square foot Food Parc is set to open on the ground floor. The venue will house a 20-foot multimedia screen for public and building only viewing events. Similar to a food court, a number of gourmet chefs including restaurateur Jeffery Chodorow and boutique eateries have already joined the Food Parc team.

Great views and decor at the Cloud Lounge
The rest of the in-house attractions can be found high atop the 56th floor. The building 3,700 square foot Cloud Lounge will be the center of amenities and best place to do some late night sky gazing. The lounge has a 2,600 square foot terrace, billiards, fireplace and entertaining kitchen. The area will act as the exclusive rental lounge while the Eventi Hotel will have its own indoor lounge. Word has it that amenities to come will be an in-house DJ for the Cloud lounge as well.

Once inside the residences, the Beatrice has some notable mentions. Originally planned to be a condominium, developers switched the building to rentals. While there is a trend in hotels with sales options such as the W Hotel and Mandarin Hotel, it will be interesting to see if the rental option works well above the Eventi. In either case, residents luck out with condo finishes.

Several 3-bedroom penthouses are at the 53rd floor starting around $18,000. However, the old adage “you get what you pay for” applies. Few other buildings in the area and even the city get such unobstructed views. Since the Beatrice begins at the 26th floor, every unit has open views stretching to Central Park, the Hudson River and the more historic buildings of Lower Manhattan. The panoramic views are only accented by the floor to ceiling windows and simple white and black finishes.

It would seem that The Beatrice will be a popular residence with those seeking an alternative to standard Chelsea or Midtown residences. While Chelsea has a booming nightlife scene, its buildings are not particularly renowned for luxury and great views. On the other end of the spectrum, Midtown has quality rentals high in the sky but the neighborhood leaves some party-goers left in the cold. FiDi traders to Midtown merchants can set out on nightlife adventures in the area without having to sacrifice the short trip to work. For the more traditional Chelsea resident worried about event hosting and image, the inspiring views and entertaining lounge are great draws.
